Low T Check

What is low testosterone (Low T)?

When a man has Low T, it means his testosterone is below normal levels. It’s natural for men to produce less testosterone as they age but it’s not natural for testosterone to fall below a certain level. When a man’s testosterone falls below a level of around 300 ng/dL, it’s generally considered to be low.

  • Symptoms of Low T
    • Run-down feeling
    • Decreased energy
    • Decreased mental quickness
    • Depression
    • Decreased muscle tone
    • Increase in body fat
    • Mild to moderate irritability
    • Low libido

What causes low testosterone?

Low T can happen when there is a signaling problem between the brain and the testes that causes a drop in the amount of testosterone that is being produced. Also, if the brain feels that there is too much testosterone in the body, it can signal the testes to cut production. Another reason Low T can occur is that your body simply can’t produce enough testosterone due to a defect in the testes.

  • Other Causes of Low T
  • Natural process of aging
  • Obesity
  • Infectious diseases
  • Excess of blood iron
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Chemo/radiation treatment
  • Performance boosting drugs
  • Pain or hormonal medication

Our providers at Bay Colony Physicians diagnose the root cause by giving you a medical exam to assess your signs and symptoms and then if necessary perform needed blood tests. We can also decide which treatment options such as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can help to bring the testosterone levels back to normal.

When your results from the lab are received a decision can then be made to schedule an additional physician appointment to correct any imbalance.

Journal Article

A study reported in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (Vol. 10, Issue 2, 2013) sought to quantify the cost burden imposed by testosterone deficiency in men.

After examining six national databases, scientists estimated that testosterone deficiency was affecting 13.4 percent of men between the ages of 45 and 74. They also estimated that testosterone deficiency is involved in the development of approximately 1.3 million new cases of cardiovascular diseases, 1.1 million new cases of diabetes, and more than 600,000 osteoporosis-related fractures in the first year it is present.

Over a 20-year period, the researchers estimated that testosterone deficiency would be responsible for up to $525 billion in health-care expenditures in the United States.

As this study points out, the cost of not treating testosterone deficiency is severe; increases in diabetes, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis are all related to testosterone deficiency.

The most frequent complaint of a man with low testosterone is fatigue. Other complaints include irritability, low libido, poor brain function, and weight gain. Testosterone deficiency has been linked to the development of many chronic illnesses including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis for over 70 years.

Balancing a man’s testosterone levels can literally change his life in a short period of time. Patients have described the feeling as being like coming out of a deep sleep.

Chelation Therapy

Chelation Therapy

Chelation (Key-ley-shun) therapy means using medication to remove certain toxic metals (including lead) and other toxic substances from the body. These medications bind to the metals and substances which have built up in the body over time, and remove them through the urine or stool. Chelation therapy was approved by the FDA for the removal of heavy metals.

What is it?

The main drug of the Chelation Therapy is EDTA. This is a synthetic/modified amino acid. It has an unusual ability to strongly attract/bind to minerals, including toxic metals-lead, aluminum, calcium, and others.

Chelation therapy is cost-efficient, relatively painless, and is covered by many insurance companies based on blood level and necessity. Chelation may help restore function to the lining of the arteries that carry the oxygen and nutrition throughout our bodies. Chelation is a relatively unknown therapy because the patent on EDTA has expired; this means that any pharmaceutical company can manufacture it, removing financial incentive to promote EDTA. The American Heart Association (AHA) claims there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate any benefit from EDTA Chelation Therapy, but there have been over 10,000 scientific papers written which support its use in many different areas.

Lead Exposure and Toxicity

Lead is a highly toxic metallic chemical that has no known benefits in the human body. Lead exists naturally as an element in the earth. Air, food, water, soil, and dust all may contain lead.

Your body’s level of lead toxicity rises as you absorb lead which can happen when you swallow or breathe in tiny particles of lead dust. Many people attain lead exposure by forgetting to wash their hands before they eat, drink or smoke.

Exposure from everyday places and things can build up in your system causing major health problems and can even kill you. Lead is often found in common items that one would not even think to consider. Some unexpected places leading to lead exposure include (but are not limited to):

What is the flu?

Influenza, commonly shortened to “flu,” is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract.

What’s the difference between a cold and flu?

The common cold and flu are both contagious viral infections of the respiratory tract. Although the symptoms can be similar, the flu is much worse. A cold may drag you down a bit, but the flu can make you shudder at the very thought of getting out of bed.

Congestion, sore throat and sneezing are common with colds. Both cold and flu bring coughing, headache, and chest discomfort. With the flu, though, you are likely to run a high fever for several days and have headaches, myalgia, fatigue, and weakness. Usually, complications from colds are relatively minor, but a severe case of the flu can lead to a life-threatening illness such as pneumonia.

More than 100 types of cold viruses are known, and new strains of flu evolve every few years. Since both diseases are viral, antibiotics cannot conquer cold or flu. Remember: Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections.

Realistic Goals

Realistic weight loss is 15-35 pounds per each 12-week session, with an average loss of 20 pounds. Patients within the Bay Colony Physicians Program in Dickinson, TX may continue with the program to achieve their weight loss goals as long as progress continues. Losing weight is a lifestyle change and this program is not a quick fix solution.

What prescription medication is used?

Phentermine is the prescription medication utilized in the program. This FDA-approved medication should not be confused with the popular “Phen-Fen” combination that was used about 7 years ago. Phentermine has been approved by the FDA for appetite suppression and weight loss and is not linked to any of the adverse heart valve problems seen with other appetite suppressants. The side effects of phentermine may include insomnia, constipation, dry mouth and sometimes fast heart rhythm. During the program, each person will have a scheduled appointment with the medical staff and is monitored closely. Discount cards for medications are located at the check-out counter.

What are B-12 Injections?

B-12 helps in the formation of red blood cells and is essential for nervous system function. B-12 creates a significant energy boost for the body which ultimately creates more movement for the patient which helps burn more calories. At Wellnow Weight Loss Clinic we provide the B-12 injections with the initial consultation and for any follow-up visits, shots will also be available FREE of charge!

Can I enter the Bay Colony Physicians Weight Loss Program if I am taking other medications?

This will depend on the stability of your medical problems and types of medications you are taking. Certainly, weight reduction will help control hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and a number of other medical problems. We have many patients enrolled in the Wellnow program who are taking blood pressure medications, antidepressants, diabetic medications and a number of other prescription medications. We will be happy to discuss this with you during the initial consultation.

** The weight loss program at Bay Colony Physicians is Cash Pay only.

^Insured patients have more weight loss options, such as additional medications and physical therapy, if they establish as a new patient or switch to one of our Primary Care Providers. Current patients may schedule a weight loss appointment with their provider to discuss weight loss options. Note: Patient may be subject to their deductible or copay if using their insurance options. All HMO insured patients are required to have one of our Primary Care Providers listed as their PCP on their insurance card. Please call insurance prior to your appointment to switch PCP.
